Ralph Mayer was a painter and art conservator who lived from 1895 until 1979. He went on to teach at Columbia University after studying painting at the Art Students League of New York. He is the author of The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques, The Painter's Craft, and A Dictionary of Art Words and Techniques, among other works.
