Yet few books in this literature address the ways directors have worked with others and have negotiated the constraints and opportunities posed by a complex production process and a sprawling commercial industry. Professor Emerita, Department of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she teaches courses on film history, film genres, film authorship and national cinemas. Her books include Creating the Couple: Love, Marriage and Hollywood Performance, Roman Polanski, and A History of Film. She served as President of the Society for Cinema Studies from 1993 to 1995.
