This book examines the subject of training military commanders for the eventuality of nuclear war. It examines the tasks likely to confront senior officers in the nuclear age, and discusses how traditional methods of training, which may have suited the needs of massed armies in the first half of the century, should be adapted to fit the demands of the modern world. General Sir Frank Kitson was commissioned in the army soon after the end of the war and retired some 40 years later in 1985. In the course of his service he spent many years with armoured formations in Germany, culminating in command of an armoured division. He also took part in counter-insurgency and peace-keeping activities in Kenya, Malaya, Oman, Cyprus and N.Ireland, and held staff appointments in the Ministry of Defence.
