Distributed Systems by Andrew S Tanenbaum
For this third edition of -Distributed Systems, - the material has been thoroughly revised and extended, integrating principles and paradigms into nine chapters: 1. Introduction 2. Architectures 3. Processes 4. Communication 5. Naming 6. Coordination 7. Replication 8. Fault tolerance 9. Security A separation has been made between basic material and more specific subjects. The latter have been organized into boxed sections, which may be skipped on first reading. To assist in understanding the more algorithmic parts, example programs in Python have been included. The examples in the book leave out many details for readability, but the complete code is available through the book's Website, hosted at www.distributed-systems.net. A personalized digital copy of the book is available for free, as well as a printed version through Amazon.com.Maarten van Steen is a full professor at the VU University Amsterdam's Computer Science department. He focuses on distributed systems, computer networks, and operating systems when he teaches. He co-authored a well-known textbook on distributed systems with Andrew Tanenbaum. Faced with the challenges that computer science undergraduates experience with mathematics, he set out to create a graph theory and complex networks course that would be less daunting and considerably more enjoyable for most students than traditional mathematics courses. His research focuses on extremely large distributed computer systems, which include systems with tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of machines connected via wired or wireless networks.
His research naturally overlaps with issues like graph theory and complexity. Maarten van Steen considers himself an experimental computer scientist, which means that real-world experiments and system prototyping are used to test ideas and solutions. This mindset has influenced his approach to theoretical work, which he believes has meaningful significance only when it can be linked to real-world systems.
