Malise Ruthven was born in 1942, and educated at Eton, Trinity College Cambridge and the Middle East Centre for Arab Studies in the Lebanon. He worked for several years at the BBC, but is now a freelance writer and broadcaster. His books include Torture: the Grand Conspiracy, Cairo, Islam in the World and Traveller Through Time: a Photographic Journey with Freya Stark; he is an occasional contributor to the Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement and The Economist. He is married with two daughters, and lives in London.
