Doctor, Detective and Arthur by Martin Booth
A biography of Arthur Conan Doyle, from his boyhood in Edinburgh, through his career as a doctor and writer not only of detective stories, but also historical fiction, spiritualism, war and jingoistic poetry. The contrasts between his glorification of manliness and his belief in fairies and support of women's suffrage are examined.
Born in Lancashire in 1944, Martin Booth was educated in Hong Kong and London. He published ten novels and a number of non-fiction titles including biographies and wildlife studies. He was also a film and documentary writer who travelled widely. He passed away in February 2004.
