She was fortunate enough to be able to read books from her father's business, which specialized in evangelical literature. Sarah's mother was a devout evangelical who died while Sarah was a child. Hesba Stretton was her pen name when she first started writing, with Stretton derived from the name of a nearby village and Hesba derived from her siblings' initials. Jessica's First Prayer, which she penned in 1867, became one of her most popular stories.
It was a big hit, and it was translated into a lot other languages. Little Meg's Children and Alone in London were two other best-sellers. She was well-versed in the plight of street children, whom she visited and assisted. She penned more than 60 books and stories based on biblical concepts.
