The Dog by John Burningham

Now in Paperback

Eyewitness: Dog highlights the evolutionary history of man's best friend from their domestication, anatomy, and behavior, for both domestic and wild breeds including wolves, jackals, and foxes. See the oldest-known remains of a domestic dog, an amazing tree-climbing fox, how a dog swims, a fox with bat ears, and a husky in a sled harness. Learn why dogs and wolves hunt in packs, how dogs talk with ears and tails, the basics of looking after a pet dog, and how dogs were specially taught to help humans.

For over 25 years, DK's Eyewitness books have been the most trusted nonfiction series in classrooms, libraries, and homes around the world. In summer 2014 this award-winning series will get a fresh new look both inside and out. The introduction of paperback editions, eye-catching jackets, and updated interiors ensure that the Eyewitness series will continue to be relevant in the ever-changing world of education and remain the go-to source for homework help, research projects, reluctant readers, ESL students, and, as always, to satisfy the minds of curious kids.

Supports the Common Core State Standards.

John Burningham works on an ancient boardroom table that originated from The Monkey Club, a school for debutantes in Kensington, and is filled with pens, pencils, paints, papers, and rough drawings in the basement of his London home. He enjoys collecting furniture, statues, stairwells, and old drapes while he isn't working on a novel. He goes around England and France in search of strange items to display in his home or sell to others. John begins the day with a huge mug of strong coffee, followed by lunch with his wife, children's book author and artist Helen Oxenbury, and a drink of fine red wine, preferably French (wine is another of his passions). He's always been fascinated by the third dimension, and many of his books are built layer by layer because he enjoys painting on various materials such as paper, cardboard, and wood to create a range of textures on the printed page.
