Dog Days by Mavis Cheek
The joy of her liberation from 11 years of marriage is somewhat compromised, Patricia feels, by the lacklustre dog who noses damply into her life as father-substitute for 10-year-old Rachel. In spite of all this, Patricia is more than ready for a fulfilled life as a single parent.
'Why Mavis Cheek is not as celebrated as Joanna Trollope or Mary Wesley is a mysteryShe's got everything they have, in spades. If anything, she's an improvement on them, in that her sense of humour is wicked and her literary allusions wider.' Observer
