Novella Carpenter grew up in a small town in Idaho and a small town in Washington State. She majored in Biology and English at the University of Washington in Seattle. She went on to study for two years at Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism under Michael Pollan. She's worked as a bug controller, a book editor, a media projectionist, a hamster oocyte collector, and, most recently, a journalist. Salon.com, Saveur.com, SFgate.com (the SF Chronicle's website), and Mother Jones have all published her work.
She's been farming in the city for more than ten years, and her neighbors still believe she's insane. It all began with a few chickens, followed by bees, and then a full-fledged farm near downtown Oakland, where she now resides.
