He's had over a dozen essays published in Novel & Short Story Writer's Market, as well as over a dozen in The Writer magazine. Write and Revise for Publication: A 6-Month Strategy for Creating an Outstanding Novel and Other Works of Fiction, his creative writing book, was published by Writer's Digest Books in 2013.

Killing Me Softly, a nonfiction environmental book he coauthored, was published by Monthly Review Press in 2002. Smith co-edits The Green Hills Literary Lantern, an online literary magazine published by Truman State University, in addition to writing.
