Drama High: Pushin' by L Divine
Even though Jayd's finished with her exams and finally has some space of her own at her mother's house, she's got to deal with the drama all around her. Mickey blames Jayd for her ruined baby shower; Rah, her ex, is bristling over her renewed relationship with beach boy Jeremy; and her number one frenemy Misty is hard at work conjuring trouble. With so much going on, it's hard for Jayd to concentrate on her spirit lessons and hair braiding business. But Jayd's determined to push back and claim some peace for herself.L.DIVINE was founded in April of 2001. Divine began work on her young adult drama series, appropriately titled Drama High. L.A. Her goal in writing for teenagers was to provide something that would simply encourage them to enjoy reading.
Drama High is the first African American young adult novel series, and it takes the reader on a roller coaster trip that everyone knows and experiences in high school. We follow Jayd Jackson, the primary heroine, through her first-hand encounters with friends, boys, adversaries, teachers, and family. Despite the fact that this series is about Jayd Jackson, a young black girl from Compton, California, who attends a largely white high school in the South Bay of Southern California, the idea and themes are universal. The books have immediately gained popularity.
Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus, Essence, and Ebony magazines, as well as various newspapers, have all given L.Divine positive reviews. Her series has piqued the public's interest, and it is rapidly gaining in popularity. There are presently 15 volumes in print, with the first one being released in October of 2006. L. is a writer who spends much of her time away from the keyboard.
Divine's organization, Empowered Readers Academy, hosts guest lectures and workshops for writers and young adults, as well as providing specialized curriculum training. She also participates in community events and serves on numerous panels as a writing expert. L.Divine worked as a Visiting Scholar at UCLA's Center for the Study of Women and is still involved in academia, researching African Diaspora and Women's Studies topics. L. is a dedicated volunteer.
Divine continues to give back to communities that might not otherwise have access to the books by volunteering her time and books to local schools and community initiatives that focus on Black American teens. L.Divine is committed to achieving her goal of encouraging young people to read for enjoyment. Jayd's college experience will be the basis of her second series, Drama U, which she is already planning. L.Divine was born in Compton, California, and has lived in various parts of Los Angeles as well as Jamaica, West Indies.
Her daughter and son now live with her in Atlanta.
