Leo Perutz, a contemporary of Franz Kafka, was born in Prague in 1882 and resided in Vienna until the Nazi Anschluss in 1938, at which time he fled to Palestine. In the early 1950s, he returned from Israel to Austria, where he died in 1957. He is the author of eleven novels that combine varied degrees of history, legend, suspense, and the weird, and is now regarded as a twentieth-century master.
