Gunther Schuller began his professional career as a French horn player with the Cincinnati Symphony in 1943, at the age of seventeen, and later served as first horn with the Metropolitan Opera. He is a well-known American composer who has composed symphonic and chamber music as well as jazz pieces. He coined the term Third Stream to describe music that combines concert and jazz elements. He was President of the New England Conservatory of Music from 1967 to 1977 and was connected with the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood for nearly twenty years, principally as its Artistic Director. Horn Technique (1962), Reflections (1986), and Early Jazz: Its Origins and Musical Evolution (1968) are his earlier books. He has also conducted prominent orchestras in North America and Europe as a guest conductor.
