The Earth Giant by Melvin Burgess

A massive hurricane uncovers a strange earth giant in the ground. Amy and Peter discover her and find themselves drawn into an unusual relationship. This unforgettable, poignant and magical story shows how the two children, especially Amy, protect their extraordinary and lonely friend. In the end they realise that, although giant in size, she is just a little girl and they help her to reunite with her own people.
Melvin Burgess was born in London in 1954. He began to train as a journalist and has had a variety of jobs as diverse as bricklaying and silk-screen printing. An Enterprise Allowance Scheme gave him the chance to develop his writing and his children's books are highly regarded. He has been short-listed for the Carnegie Medal three times - for THE CRY OF THE WOLF, AN ANGEL FOR MAY and THE BABY AND FLY PIE. The last title was also short-listed for the Guardian Prize. Melvin lives in Lancashire.
