Earth in the Mouth by Carsten Jensen
This is a story about the beauty and the loss of senses, as experienced by the protagonist, Thomas, a young Dane travelling in India. Thomas feels the discomfort which often surprises travellers in the Third World, the sensation of being mentally and physically weakened by culture shock.Carsten Jensen grew up in Marstal, Denmark, sailing on his father's boat, the Abelone, a 220-ton freighter. He went back to Marstal in 2000 to compose We, the Drowned. He has reported from China, Cambodia, Central America, the Pacific Islands, and Afghanistan as a literary critic and journalist.
