Carsten Jensen grew up in Marstal, Denmark, sailing on his father's boat, the Abelone, a 220-ton freighter. He went back to Marstal in 2000 to compose We, the Drowned. He has reported from China, Cambodia, Central America, the Pacific Islands, and Afghanistan as a literary critic and journalist.
