Bren Smith is an ocean farmer who pioneered the development of restorative 3D ocean farming after working as a commercial fisherman. He was born and reared in Newfoundland, and at the age of 14, he dropped out of high school to work on fishing boats from the Grand Banks to the Bering Sea. His work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, National Geographic, and The Atlantic; his ocean farm received the Buckminster Fuller Challenge for ecological design and was named one of TIME magazine's Best Inventions in 2017. He is the proprietor of Thimble Island Ocean Farm and the Executive Director of Greenwave, a non-profit that helps new ocean farmers get started.
