Edward Lear by Jenny Gaschke
The National Maritime Museum holds a small but exquisite collection of watercolours by the poet and landscape painter Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888). Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author, and poet, renowned for his literary nonsense, in both poetry and prose especially his limericks, a form that he popularised. He began working as early as he could as a serious illustrator and his first publication, published when he was 19, was illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots in 1830. His paintings were well received and he was favourably compared with Audubon. Throughout his life he continued to paint seriously, and travelled extensively in Europe, the Middle East and India, becoming famous for views which have fittingly been described as poetical topography. This beautifully produced sketchbook evokes the artist’s journey, reproducing the images at approximately life size, with extended captions and occasional excerpts from Lear’s diary. A brief introduction outlines Lear’s life and a short essay provides an insight into some of his extraordinary work and travels.
