EH BOOK OF INDUSTRIAL ENGLAND by Barrie Trinder
Industrial architecture has had an extraordinary impact on the English landscape - from the imposing gloominess of northern mills and Midland's ironworks to the art deco splendour of the Hoover factory in West London. In this work, Stratton and Trinder show how factories evolved over three centuries and what machinery, structure and ornamentation reveals about the function and status of particular complexes, as well as about those who built and worked in them. Encompassing over 15 years of study, the book is suitable for architects, students, historians and general readers.
Barrie Trinder is an international authority on the history of industry, the editor of the first encyclopedia of industrial Archaeology, of the standard work on the industrial landscapes of England and Wales, and of the first comprehensive survey of 20th-century industrial archeology in Britain. He spent 30 years teaching in Shropshire and was closely associated with the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, serving as the Museum's honorary historian until 1990.
