He designed Alfred Lord Tennyson's home, among other things, on the condition that he not be paid; this led to a long friendship. Knowles formed the Metaphysical Society to bring together and discuss the prominent leaders of faith and science. In 1904, he was knighted, and he married twice. He was interred in the Brighton Extra Mural Cemetery after dying in Brighton.
