Encyclopedia of Quilting & Patchwork Technique by Katharine Guerrier

This book has projects suitable for all levels of ability, from simple pieced block designs for the beginner experimenting with colour, pattern and texture to more complex challenges for the experienced needleworker. The Encyclopedia of Quilting and Patchwork Techniques covers both the traditional techniques, such as 'English' or mosaic patchwork, block patchwork and applique, and more recent developments using rotary cutters and sewing machines. The variety of different styles is reflected in an inspirational and colourful gallery of both traditional and contemporary designs. To interpret or reproduce the traditional patterns gives the satisfaction of making something both useful and beautiful. The time and skill expended on historical quilts are apparent in the artistry of contemporary quiltmakers, illustrating the enduring attraction of this imaginative craft.

Katharine Guerrier has been making quilts and embroideries since 1980. She was trained at the Camberwell School of Art in London and worked for some years as a teacher. Further courses in textiles followed, including studying design and embroidery at Loughborough College of Art.

A regular contributor to local and national quilt exhibitions, Katharine’s work has won prizes and been exhibited in the UK and the USA. She has been a member of the Quilter's Guild and the Worcestershire Guild of Designer Craftsmen, and her work has been featured in both British and American magazines.

Her work draws on the traditional motifs of pieced patchwork, developing them to give a contemporary feel. An interest in all the Decorative Arts provides the motivation for Katharine to attempt to create textiles which are original and collectable.
