Encyclopedia of Respiratory Medicine by Sam Janes
Encyclopedia of Respiratory Medicine, Second Edition, Six Volume Set explores the key processes of lung diseases and their diagnosis and management. The book dissects the molecular and cellular biology, physiology and immunology that underpin normal lung function, along with the aberrations that occur in respiratory diseases, from common disorders such as asthma and COPD to rarer lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary hypertension. Written in at a time when the globe is in the grip of respiratory pandemic, lung disease has never been so prominent in the public and political conscious. This new edition will provide new researchers in respiratory medicine with a solid foundation in unfamiliar topics and will update more experienced researchers seeking to step outside their core areas of research to put their work into a broader context.
Sam Janes is head of UCL Respiratory and works as a clinical scientist leading a team spanning laboratory work examining the earliest steps of lung cancer development through to screening trials aiming to identify lung cancer as a curable disease. His focus is delivering his work to patients. This has included a novel cell and gene therapy developed in his lab taken through to a first-in-man trial, and recently his work demonstrating the damage caused by tobacco to the normal epithelium of the lung. This work has given us intriguing insights into respiratory biology, potentially demonstrating an unknown power of regeneration in the lung. Most important however was the works global impact on the general public’s awareness of the relentless damage caused by smoking and the crucial message that it is ‘never too late to quit’.
