Engaging Exceptional Students by Theresa A Ochoa

Engaging Exceptional Students: A Primer for Collaboration and Positive Classroom Management was written to provide future educators guidance for cultivating an inclusive, accepting, and compassionate classroom for students with disabilities. The opening chapter offers readers an introduction to students with disabilities and the school-to-prison pipeline, highlighting the need to prepare educators to respond non-punitively to challenging behaviors exhibited by some students with disabilities. Additional chapters provide an overview of the history of special education, an exploration of federal disability laws, and discussion of the federal process for evaluation and eligibility for special education services. Readers learn the importance of educators and parents as partners in support of exceptional students, as well as characteristics and needs of students with disabilities. The textbook reviews key frameworks for educating all learners, behavioral interventions to improve learning, and academic interventions. An enlightening and essential guide for modern educators, Engaging Exceptional Students is an ideal resource for introductory courses in special education.
