The English Governess at the Siamese Court by Anna Harriette Leonowens

In 1862 King Mongkut of Siam engaged Englishwoman Anna Leonowens to teach his children. Young, adventurous, but rather prone to moralize, Anna was often at loggerheads with the King. So in 1867 she left Siam, but wrote an account of her adventure that inspired the Hollywood movie "The King and I". It remains an interesting picture of Siam over a century ago, and in particular of its larger-than-life monarch.
