Neil J. Smelser is a former director of Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and a former University Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences and a former president of the American Sociological Association. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a former president of the American Sociological Association. He has fifteen works to his credit, including The Theory of Collective Behavior, which he joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1958.
