Julian Symons was born in 1912. He was a notable biographer, critic and novelist, a master of the detective story and its leading critic (Bloody Murder, 1972). He published studies of his brother A. J. A., Dickens, Carlyle, Poe and Dashiell Hammett. His Critical Observations were published in 1981. Makers of the Revolution in Literature, 1912-1939 (which concentrated particularly on Eliot, Joyce, Lewis and Pound) was published in 1987. Julian Symons died in 1994.
