Et Cetera, Et Cetera by Lewis Thomas
This is a book about simple but important words, and how they shed light on the way the human mind works. The author, winner of the National Book Award, examines the origin of words, the development of language, and tells us how language preserves us, binds us, and makes us a social species.Lewis Thomas was born in New York in 1913 and died in 1993. In 1937, he graduated from Princeton with a bachelor's degree and a doctorate in medicine. He went on to become a professor of pediatric research at the University of Minnesota, chairman of the Departments of Pathology and Medicine at New York University-Bellevue Medical Center and also dean, chairman of the Department of Pathology and dean at Yale Medical School, and president of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. The Lives of a Cell, his now-classic novel, earned the National Book Prize in 1974.
