In 1937, he graduated from Princeton with a bachelor's degree and a doctorate in medicine. He went on to become a professor of pediatric research at the University of Minnesota, chairman of the Departments of Pathology and Medicine at New York University-Bellevue Medical Center and also dean, chairman of the Department of Pathology and dean at Yale Medical School, and president of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. The Lives of a Cell, his now-classic novel, earned the National Book Prize in 1974.
