She has been working in communications for nearly twenty years, including stints as an editor in magazine publishing, an account executive in public relations, a manager of research communications, and an editor in marketing communications.
MacLean supplements her fiction-writing career by speaking at schools and conferences on writing and publishing. Among the lectures she has developed and delivered are: What's the Big Idea? which addresses where ideas come from and how to tell if they're any good, and From I to E: The Writers Life, in which she relates how she works with book editors, how the publishing process works, and much more.
MacLean has a B. A. in English Literature. She lives in Michigan with her husband and two children. How It's Done is her first book for teens.
