Every Woman Remembered by Sylvia Mason
Seven Newport women died in the Great War. Only four of them are commemorated on the Newport Roll of Honour. This book rights that omission and also pays tribute to the work of other Newport women who survived the war. It celebrates the lives and sacrifices of suffragettes, munitionettes, philanthropists, nurses and those who volunteered for the newly-formed women's services. Life for women was never to be the same again as they took giant steps towards a more equal society. At home and abroad, they contributed to the amazing changes for women in the world created by the war to end all wars.
After reading this book, I felt intensely proud of these magnificent Newport women of whom I knew little beforehandSylvia must be congratulated for undertaking such a worthwhile project. Dame Rosemary Butler DBE
Sylvia was educated at Lady Margaret High School, Cardiff, The Western Theological College, Bristol and Bristol University where she gained a BA and a PGCE. While her son and daughter were young, she gained a Masters degree with the Open University, her specialism being Victorian poetry. Her career was spent as a teacher of English in secondary schools in Bristol, Newport and the Valleys. Since retirement, having more time has meant being able to develop her interests in music, art history, literature, travel and embroidery. She particularly values the time she spends with her three lively granddaughters.
