This title explores experimental layouts in graphic design, using a broad variety of contemporary work and interviews. It highlights the process used to create the work and contains formal analysis of the effects of composition. The types of approach and technique for achieving different effects are reviewed. Single pages and the consecutive layout of magazines, books and newspapers are discussed and an extended, illustrated glossary covers all the practical aspects of layout.
Ian Noble is currently Course Director for the BA(Hons) Graphic and Media Design at the London College of Printing. He has worked as art director on national magazines and is a book designer (designed books, notably the highly acclaimed 'Shipping Forecast' showcasing the photography of Mark Power, and the book of photography by Catherine Yass). He is a contributor to Eye magazine (UK) and has had work published in Emigre and Zed (USA). Russell Bestley is Currently a Senior Lecturer at the London College of Printing, School of Graphic Design. His written and design work has been published in Eye (UK), Emigre and Zed magazines (USA), and he has contributed to a wide range of publications and conferences relating to social responsibility, politics and graphic design.
