Explorations and Exchanges by Claudia Jensen
The publications of Professor Daniel Clarke Waugh, a specialist in early modern Russian and Eurasian studies, have influenced many fields of inquiry in innumerable ways. Waugh has not only assembled one of the longest personal bibliographies of landmark studies, including works in Russian, but has also trained graduate students, established and edited an academic journal (The Silk Road Journal), was one of the earliest advocates of and authorities in Eurasian studies, contributed to the growth and reputation of the History Department at the University of Washington, and befriended and mentored generations of younger scholars. The wide-ranging collection of articles published here, in honor of Professor Waugh’s eighty-fifth birthday, range from early modern Russia to the nomadic empires of China and Central Asia; they focus on imagery, religion, text studies, and the history of communication and newspapers—a fitting tribute to the work and legacy of one of our most respected scholars.
