Exploring the Islands of Scotland by Julian Holland

Wild, remote, and rich in both history and wildlife, the many islands dotting Scotland's coastline are among the most unspoiled and beautiful destinations in the world. Formed during violent upheavals in the Earth's crust nearly 3 billion years ago, and later eroded and shaped by the Ice Age, the islands also bear the scars of thousands of years of human occupation. With their Neolithic settlements, early Celtic Christian chapels, Viking place names, and clan fortresses, as well as more modern relics from two world wars, the islands are a historical treasure trove second to none. Both beautiful and practical, Exploring the Islands of Scotland offers the intrepid traveler fascinating insight into this stunning region. It details each island's history and flora and fauna, and provides valuable information on how to get there, what to see, where to stay, and the best island walks. More than 200 full-color photographs capture each gorgeous locale.
Julian Holland gives us the ultimate practical guide to 44 fantastic islands scattered around the coast of mainland ScotlandYou'll be lost for choice as each one throws up amazing landscape opportunities for the intrepid photographer. A mine of information, Julian has left no rock unturned and gives us an in-depth history of the islands, how to get there, Ordnance Survey references, tourist information, where to stay guides and island walks. All you need to do is get your bag, boots and tripod packed, pick up a copy of this gem and get going. Amateur Photographer If the soothsayers are right and rising fuel costs spell the end for fancy foreign holidays, stay at home Scots could do worse than get to know the wonderful islands around their own coastline. This new guide makes an excellent starting point. As a taster for Scotland's island treasures it makes a practical planning aid for would-be explorers, but it's probably more suitable for leaving behind on the coffee table than cramming into a rucksack. Aberdeen Press & Journal Provides the intrepid traveller with a fascinating insight into the history of over 120 islands and valuable information on how to get there and what to do when you're there. Best of British Anyone who, like me, feels the tug of distant shores, will enjoy this new book on the inslands of Scotland! The articles are accompanied by the kind of excellent photography that the grand subject matter demands, with images of Hebridean beaches and cosy fishing villages providing the ideal food for the armchair traveller. This book will be an invaluable aid and makes fascinating reading, covering a wide range of aspects of their history, the role of man on them and their wildlife interest. Highland News
Julian Holland trained as an artist at Cheltenham College of Art before going on to study graphic design, illustration and photography.
