
Factory of Tears by Valzhyna Mort
A young Belarussian poet co-translated by Pulitzer Prize-winner Franz Wright, who calls Valzhyna Mort ElectrifyingValzhyna Mort, a Belarussian poet, first published in the United States in 2008 with the poem collection Factory of Tears (Copper Canyon Press). Collected Bodies (Copper Canyon Press, 2012) is her second book. In 2005, Mort was awarded the Crystal of Vilenica award in Slovenia, and in 2008, he was awarded the Burda Poetry Award in Germany. She was awarded the Lannan Foundation Literary Fellowship and the Poetry Magazine Bess Hokin Award in 2010. She has been a resident poet at Berlin's Literarisches Colloquium and Graz's Internationales Haus der Autoren.
New European Poets (Graywolf Books, 2008) contains her English translations of Eastern European writers. Mort writes in Belarusian at a time when efforts are being made to re-establish the traditional language, following the government's decision to abandon attempts to incorporate it into Russian. In both Belarusian and English, she speaks her poems orally. She currently resides in Washington, DC.
