Everyone has at one time been inspired or enchanted by fairy tales, with their evil witches, pure princesses, heroic princes, and happy endings. Goldilocks, it turns out, evolved from the little old woman of the original story into a young girl. Little Red Ridinghood was actually eaten by the wolf, and in an early version of the Frog Prince, the princess had to sleep with the frog to free him from his spell.

Jan Pienkowski has illustrated many books for children, including the hugely popular Meg and Mog books by Helen Nicoll. He has twice won the Kate Greenaway Medal, for his illustrations in Joan Aiken's THE KINGDOM UNDER THE SEA in 1972 and for HAUNTED HOUSE in 1979. Co-founder of the greeting card company Gallery Five (of which he remains a director), Jan Pienkowski has worked as an art director in advertising, publishing, and for the BBC children's television series WATCH. He lives in London.
