Elisabeth Jay was born in London and attended Talbot Heath School in Bournemouth and St. Paul's School in London. Oxford's Anne's College. She has primarily lived and worked in Oxford, with brief visits to the United States and France for research and/or teaching. Her scholarly editions of Victorian works in a variety of genres have followed two broad paths, which occasionally intersected: work on a number of Victorian women writers and the cross-disciplinary study of nineteenth-century literature and theology, as well as scholarly editions of Victorian works in a variety of genres. She has been Professor Emerita at Oxford Brookes University since September 2011.
