Derek Murray raises some profound questions facing the hospice movement, and the chaplains who work within it, in today's secularised world: what is the special role of the chaplain? what about those of other faiths, and none? what happens when respect for the dying conflicts with other principles or wishes? what about the use of resources?
Derek Murray is a Baptist pastor. He has been Chaplain to St Columba's Hospice, in Edinburgh, since 1977, and lectures at New College, Edinburgh. He is active in the Association of Hospice Chaplains (and is currently its Education Secretary), and is Scottish representative on the International Council of Pastoral Care and Counselling.
