The Fallen Children by David Owen
Inspired by The Midwich Cuckoos, The Fallen Children is a gripping 'science fiction-meets-real world' story of the teenagers who, during one inexplicable 'Nightout', have their futures snatched away by circumstances beyond their control. It is a story of violation, of judgement, and of young people who must fight to defy what is expected of them.
The best book I've read in ages. . At its surface, The Fallen Children is a pacy, gripping, intriguing superhero origin story, but beneath that, it's a poignant examination of the extent to which modern society spits on its young adults. * Alice Oseman, author of Solitaire and Radio Silence *
A powerful and disturbing new take on an original classic. * Tim Bowler, award-winning author of River Boy *
Engrossing, unusual, and unpatronising * SFX magazine *
'Read The Fallen Children if you'd like less middle-class kidlit, allegorical commentary on society and teens, and dead good books' * Non Pratt *
'THE FALLEN CHILDREN is ATTACK THE BLOCK meets VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED and feels like the London I know. It's very cool' * Juno Dawson *
'An ingenious twist on a classic. Surprisingly tender and moving, completely convincing and gripping' * Kiran Millwood Hargrave *
Owen examines teenage credibility, mob mentality and how love, or the lack of it, shapes any kind of life. This is a riveting refashioning of a science fiction classic. * the Guardian *
