The Familiar by Roddy Phillips

For the past 12 years on a weekly basis, readers of the "Press & Journal" have been given a candid and often humourous insight into the life of the newspaper's arts critic Roddy Phillips and his family. The column was motivated by the sudden shock of moving to the country and the need to share everyday experiences involving floods and infestations of protected species, amongst other dramas. "The Familiar - A Life in Weekly Instalments" is a collection of domestic confessionals and makes the commonplace and the familiar both remarkable and enduring.
Roddy Phillips comes from the North East of Scotland, is married to the acclaimed Scottish painter Catriona Millar and has two sons. Roddy has worked as a freelance journalist for more than thirty years. He is the theatre and arts critic for the Press & Journal and has also contributed to The Sunday Times, Scotland on Sunday, BBC Radio, STV and a range of magazines. He is an artist and musician and was for many years a professional portrait illustrator. He has also worked in advertising for thirty years, has directed over a hundred TV commercials and now runs his own advertising agency, The Agency. Roddy is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
