Mary Hayes graduated from the University of CT with a B.S. in Animal Science and a M.S. in Livestock and Farm Management. She raised and trained horses with her husband, Richard Hayes, on their farm Hazelwood Morgan Farm in CT. They showed carriage horse in the Morgan Horse Shows, winning many championship and also showed in Combined Driving against the best in the country and was asked to represent the United States abound with their horses many times. Mary won the Reserve United States Combined Driving Pair Horse Championship. Her pair also won Grand Champion Pair Horse at the largest pleasure driving show in North America, Walnut Hill. Mary was diagnosed with M.S. about 10 years ago. She continued to show and train till it became too difficult. Not willing to give in to M.S., she continued to teach and to reinvent herself in many new ways.
