The period between 1900 and 1950 witnessed fundamental changes in the way of life in Britain. Gradually contemporary Britain emerged from the horse drawn Victorian age and underwent many changes that were completely unthinkable for the people of the new century. The motor car, the aeroplane and television are all taken for granted now but simply didn't exist at the beginning of the 20th century. Women couldn't vote and few of them worked outside the home. By 1950 the Britain of the Victorians had been swept away in a tide of technology and by two terrible world wars that had engulfed Europe.
Edmund Swinglehurst was born in Chile but has lived most of his life in Britain. He studied art in Paris, has been an independent school headmaster, an advertising executive and a Public Relations manager for Thomas Cook. He now works as a freelance wri
