Making lists of your favourite movies is a popular party game because everyone has an opinion. After an introductory overview of the genre, the critic describes each film in an essay covering who made it and why, its artistic features and technical interest, the broader context in which it was made, and his or her own reasons for choosing it. The result is an enormously varied selection: old favourites such as King Kong and The Hustler are found alongside genuine rarities.
Geoff Andrew has been a highly respected film critic for more than fifteen years. He is senior film editor at Time Out magazine, and since 1999 has been the programmer at the National Film Theatre. He has written six books on film, including Stranger Than Paradise, a book on maverick American film-makers, and a study of Kieslowski's Three Colours trilogy.
