He also taught at a number of other universities across the country, including the University of Texas at El Paso, Colorado State University, Reed College, and Carnegie-Mellon University. One to Count Cadence is a Vietnam novel, while The Wrong Case, The Last Good Kiss, Dancing Bear, The Mexican Tree Duck, Bordersnakes, The Last Country, and The Right Madness are seven detective novels. In 2008, he died in Missoula.
