Focusing on Durham Cathedral, this book offers explorations of prayer in the context of the idea of holy places and would appeal to anyone interested in using places known to them to help develop their own experience of prayer. 'A holy place...is a place that becomes a 'gateway to heaven', writes Chris Cook, 'a place in which we are aware of the presence of God.' These places may be geographical or architectural, or they may be metaphorical: places of loss, or achievement, or transition. This book explores prayer in holy spaces: physical places where we can go to be nearer to God. It is focused on one particular place - Durham Cathedral (voted the country's best-loved building) - but it is designed to enable the reader to explore prayer in other holy places also. The Revd Professor Chris Cook is an Anglican priest and psychiatrist. He currently works as Professorial Research Fellow in the Department of Theology & Religion, Durham University and as a consultant psychiatrist with Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS Trust. He is also a team member at St Antony's Priory, Durham (an ecumenical spirituality project of the Society of Sacred Mission), and a qualified Myers-Briggs Type Indicator consultant.
