Finding Vincent by Gary Vincent

Finding Vincent: My Journey of Adoption, Discovery and Reunion is the true story of a lifelong search for identity, family, and the answers hidden by adoption. At the age of ten, Gary Vincent learned that he was adopted. Although he was raised in a loving family in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the knowledge that another family existed somewhere remained with him throughout his life. Questions about his birth parents, his origins, and the circumstances surrounding his adoption never completely disappeared. In 1992, while recuperating from his first serious work injury, Gary began his first determined search for his birth family. His efforts were complicated by sealed adoption records and limited information. Years passed, and life took him in other directions. He built a career in law enforcement, married, raised a family, and eventually retired because of a duty-related disability. Yet the unanswered questions remained. In 2018, Gary's search began again. Advances in DNA testing and genealogy provided new possibilities that had not existed during his earlier attempts. What followed was a series of discoveries that opened doors to a family he had never known and revealed connections reaching back through generations. The search ultimately led Gary to his birth mother, Margaret. On December 13, 2018, after more than six decades of wondering, he finally met her. Their reunion lasted only a few weeks before Margaret died, making their brief time together both extraordinary and bittersweet. Gary also discovered siblings and extended family members, each discovery adding another piece to a story that had remained incomplete for most of his life. Along the way, Gary uncovered an especially meaningful connection to the name Vincent and began to understand more about the family history that had been hidden from him since birth. Finding Vincent is more than a story about locating biological relatives. It is a memoir about adoption, identity, perseverance, family, loss, and the courage to keep searching for answers. It explores the realization that loving the family who raised you and wanting to know the family you came from are not contradictory.
