Finished Last at Folkestone by John Norbury
Finished Last at Folkestone is the story of John Norbury who visited all 60 UK racecourses as part of his love of racing. From Cheltenham to York, Catterick to Goodwood, John takes us to many of the courses and shares his memories of the people he meets, races he witnesses and gambles won and lost. Since being old enough to look at the runners and riders everyday in his dad's morning newspaper, John Norbury became embroiled in the sport of horseracing and wanted to know more. He developed a desire to explore everything this fabulous sport had to offer; from the jockeys and the trainers to the various idiosyncrasies each individual course offered. As a part tribute to his love of racing and part memoir, his book - Finished Last at Folkestone - blends comedy, personal tragedy and factual information in a title that will appeal to all racegoers.
Reading this fascinating book took me on a journey to every racecourse in BritainJohn's work will certainly appeal to racing enthusiasts but I hope it reaches the wider audience it certainly deserves. The heart-warming story of the love between father and son shines from every page, sharing the humorous and varied experiences from course to course. If you are looking for a tale of racegoing revelry, family bonds and a passion for the Sport of Kings then this is definitely the book for you. -- Andy Gibson Racing analyst and pro punter. I first came across John whilst working for Racing UK at Carlisle a couple of years ago. Our paths have crossed a number of times since due to one horse - the redoubtable Matmata De Tendron. Andy Crook's grey has been a regular on the northern circuit for more years than I care to remember and he clearly takes after his owners when it comes to enthusiasm and the will to win. John has witnessed all 8 of his career wins and he was also on duty at Cheltenham on New Year's Day in 2006 when watching Burnt Oak taste Listed success in a bumper. Indeed, trekking up and down the country to watch his beloved horses has become a way of life for John. You will soon realise after reading a couple of pages of this book how much passion the author has for the sport. -- Mark Howard Author and Racing UK pundit.
