Fire Fighting Equipment by Brian Wright
Hand-pumped fire engines were first produced in the seventeenth century and a highly efficient machine was eventually developed by Richard Newsham. From the 1860s manual engines began to be superseded by steam fire engines but many households kept small manual pumps; a variety of such devices was available. This book shows the development of the manual fire pump and also covers some of the other basic items of firefighting equipment.
Brian Wright has been interested in the history of fire insurance and firefighting for many years. Among his particular interests is the history of the brigades once maintained by the fire insurance companies, the development of manual fire engine in all its various form and the evolution of the fireman's uniform.
