Fire Within by Mary Robertson
A thousand howling wolfmen. A missing wife and son. A whisper of treason. The end of the Taroshian Empire draws near.
Ivan Styles murdered his sister in a drunken stupor. At least that's what his lord father has led him, and the world, to believe. His confession bought his wife's safety, but also sealed his fate. With nothing left to him but guilt, he yearns for the headsman's axe. However, when Ivan receives word that his wife and child have gone missing anyway, he can no longer meekly die. He allies with a band of hard-headed criminals and man-eating wolfmen and breaks out of prison. Back home in Whitegarde, he finds his wife's house burned to the ground. His old acquaintances among the nobles want nothing to do with him. Even the thieves and killers of the slums are wary of the man best known for murdering his own sister. Unable and unwilling to let his wife go, he digs deep and uncovers a tiny sliver of a voice that whispers of half-covered-up secrets. Secrets of what happened to his wife and, if one knows how to listen, who really murdered his sister. Fire Within grabs hold of readers and doesn't let go until the last sentence.
