First-hand Science: Seashore by Lynn Huggins-Cooper
An innovative new series that explores the science of children's everyday world by using a very simple story to introduce panels of linked information. As the child in the story experiences science first-hand so too does the reader. Each book contains a great deal of information but it is presented in such a simple way that it is easily accessible to a wide age range. The books are illustrated throughout with beautiful 'picture book' illustrations for the story and clear 'diagramatic' art for the panels. Each book ends with suggested activities, useful words, index and notes about the book. In Seashore, the reader joins David on a day trip to the beach and discovers all about rock pools, seabirds, seaweed, dunes and even how pebbles are made. In Plants and Flowers, the reader joins Ruby as she helps her aunt in her garden, planting out flowers, gathering fruits and seeds and seeing how plants grow.
Lynn Huggins-Cooper was a primary school teacher and now lectures in primary science at Newcastle University. She specialises in interactive teaching methods. She also creates wildlife gardens for schools and runs a conservation club. She lives with her family in Northumberland.
