The First World War by Geoffrey Jukes

More than 80 years on, the First World War continues to fascinate. This volume, with a new foreword by Professor Hew Strachan, covers the fighting in all theatres of the war, detailing Russia's humiliation at Tannenberg: great battles such as the Somme, Verdun and Ypres; and memorable campaigns and battles in Palestine and Italy. The lives of soldiers and civilians caught up in the struggle are explored through first hand accounts, offering a moving and very personal insight into the horrors of war. Combining Essential Histories 13, 14, 22 and 23, this great value special edition explores the causes, events and effects of the First World War.
After leaving Oxford in 1953 Geoffrey Jukes spent 14 years in the UK Ministry of Defence and Foreign and Colonial Office, specialising in Russian/Soviet military history, strategy and arms control. From 1967 to 1993 he was also on the staff of the Australian National University. Peter Simkins worked at the Imperial War Museum for over 35 years and was its Senior Historian from 1976 until his retirement in 1999. Awarded the MBE that year for his services to the Museum, he is currently Honorary Professor in Modern History at the University of Birmingham, a Vice-President of the Western Front Association and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Michael Hickey joined the army in 1947 and served in Korea, East Africa, Suez and Aden. Before his retirement in 1981 he was Colonel GS Ministry of Defence. In 2000 he was awarded the Westminster medal for Military Literature.
