Fishing for Ghosts by Mike Harding
In this new collection, Harding casts his poetic line to retrieve ghosts from the near and more distant past, his eyes and ears caught by fragments snagged in his visual and aural memory. A lifetime of listening, observing, thinking and reflecting produces poems that tell stories in his own voice; at times amused, bemused, angry or simply taken by the transient beauty of light in nature or a splash of colour in an urban environment. Harding is a natural storyteller and, like all true storytellers, his direct language engages listener and reader alike in the recognition that their own poems may also be waiting to be retrieved from the seemingly random.Mike Harding was born in Crumpsall, Manchester, in 1944, into a working class Irish Catholic family. His writing has ranged from comedy to church architecture, from poetry to playwriting, from short stories to novels and, unsurprisingly, from fell-walking to a manual for fishermen on how to tie flies, with many of the books illustrated with his own photographs. Mike has presented the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards since 2000, and between 1997 and 2012 he presented the weekly folk and roots programme The Mike Harding Show. He now has his own highly popular internet radio show.
